What to Put in a Baby Hamper: An Australian Checklist
When someone asks me what should go in a baby hamper, my answer is usually fewer things than they expect. Five categories cover almost every family, and a hamper that sticks to them looks considered instead of stuffed.
The short version: one everyday textile, one comforter or soft toy, one small play piece, one keepsake, and a card with a real message on it. Check each listing for materials, care and age guidance, and don't add things just to fill space.
The five things I start with
A muslin, wrap or blanket comes first, because it gets used every day. Then something soft to cuddle, like a comforter or a plush toy. A simple rattle gives the baby something to hold as they grow. For the keepsake, choose something that outlasts the newborn weeks, like a wooden brush engraved with the baby's name. Finish with a card that says something only you would say.
If you know the parents well, add one small thing for the mum. She is the one doing the night feeds.
You don't need to cover every baby need. Each piece just needs a reason to be there.
Think about the season and the stage
Lighter cotton pieces make more sense in a Queensland summer, and soft knits suit the cooler months further south. For a baby shower, the baby hasn't arrived yet, so don't rely on exact newborn sizes. If the baby is already here, use their name and what you know about the family.
For materials, care and age guidance, always go by the current product listing.
What I leave out
Strong scents, unless you know the family likes them. Food or skincare, unless you have checked for allergies. Big toys, a fourth muslin, or anything meant for a toddler, because those end up in a cupboard rather than in use.
A smaller hamper where everything goes together is easier on parents who are unpacking it on very little sleep.
Presentation and delivery
Every Wrap With Love hamper is arranged and wrapped by hand and arrives ready to give, with your message handwritten on the card inside. Double-check the recipient's address and add a mobile number where the checkout asks for one.
Order before 12pm, Monday to Friday, and it leaves the same day. Within our Brisbane local delivery area, delivery is free on orders over $70. Anywhere else in Australia, shipping is free on orders over $130.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most useful thing to put in a baby hamper?
Usually a muslin or a blanket, because it gets used daily. Which one depends on the season and on what the family already has.
Should a baby hamper include something for the mum?
It can, and when you know her, I think it should. A small self-care piece or a thoughtful note reminds her that the gift is for her too.
Does it need to be personalised?
No. A name adds meaning, but a well-chosen gift without one is just as thoughtful. If you do add engraving, it doesn't slow anything down: orders placed before 12pm, Monday to Friday, still leave the same day.
